Natural Language Processing (NLP)

The ability of a computer program to understand human language as it is spoken. NLP is a component of artificial intelligence (AI). The development of NLP applications is challenging because computers traditionally require humans to "speak" to them in a programming language that is precise, unambiguous and highly structured, or through a limited number of clearly enunciated voice commands. Human speech, however, is not always precise -- it is often ambiguous and the linguistic structure can depend on many complex variables, including slang, regional dialects and social context.

Network Effects

The ways in which a platform’s consumer base impacts the value of the platform. In essence, the more people who are engaged with a platform, the more useful and valuable it is. You can see network effects at work when a platform attains a critical mass of users, at which point its user network begins growing itself, intrinsically making the product more and more valuable. When a new user/member is added to the network, it increases the value of the product or service to all other users. This increased value can be in the form of cost reduction (in user acquisition as an example), higher liquidity (in a marketplace), stronger community or deeper relationships (in social networks), etc.

Neural Networks

Deep learning is essentially a brute-force process for teaching machines how a thing is done or what a thing is. Show a deep learning neural network 19 million pictures of cats and probabilities emerge, inclinations are ruled out, and the software neurons eventually figure out what statistically significant factors equate to feline. It learns how to spot a cat. That’s why Big Data is so important—without it, deep learning just doesn’t work.

NFC — Near Field Communication

A form of contactless communication between devices like smartphones or tablets. Contactless communication allows a user to wave the smartphone over a NFC compatible device to send information without needing to touch the devices together or go through multiple steps setting up a connection.

NPS — Net Promoter Score

Calculation based on the following formula of social media or customer opinion: % Prompter minus % Detractor (while ignoring the % Passive)

The process of building relationships with potential customers before they are ready to buy
