We have compiled terms and their definitions from different digital technologies. You will find that some terms are linked with others which will be highlighted in the text or end with a “See” link. IAB — Interactive Advertising Bureau

An advertising business organization that develops industry standards, conducts research, and provides legal support for the online advertising industry. The organization represents a large number of the most prominent media outlets globally, but mostly in the United States and in Europe.

IAAS — Infrastructure as a Service

In an IaaS model, a cloud computing provider hosts the infrastructure components traditionally present in an on-premises data center, including servers, storage and networking hardware, as well as the virtualization or hypervisor layer. The IaaS provider also supplies a range of services to accompany those infrastructure components. These can include detailed billing, monitoring, log access, security, load balancing and clustering, as well as storage resiliency, such as backup, replication and recovery.

To form an idea of; imagine or conceive. Used in start-up/VC circles for floating ideas around group for purposes of further improving and developing the idea.

The number of times a page is viewed over a fixed period of time. Thus, if a page receives 1,000 impressions per day, then that page is viewed 1,000 over the course of the day.

Impression Share

A metric included in Google AdWords that shows how often a particular advertisement shows up in search results.

All aspects of a digital marketing focusing on specific Buyer Personas.

Organizations offering offer dedicated office space to startups (and may encourage startups to find their own dedicated space), but may have a physical location for shared resources and accelerator events such as invited guest speaker talks and advising office hours. Incubators tend to offer dedicated office and development space to the startups for a set period of time. Incubators tend to focus on relatively early stage startups, as this is when companies can typically most benefit from outside help. Initial Coin Offering — (ICO)

Capital raising method used by startups to bypass the rigorous and regulated capital-raising process required by venture capitalists or banks. In an ICO campaign, a percentage of the tokens is sold to early backers of the project in exchange for legal tender or other cryptocurrencies, but usually for Bitcoin. Early investors in the operation are usually motivated to buy the tokens in the hope that the plan becomes successful after it launches which could translate to a higher token value than what they purchased it for before the project was initiated.


The use of technology innovations designed to squeeze out savings and efficiency from the current insurance industry model. The belief driving insurtech companies is that the insurance industry is ripe for innovation and disruption.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and Internet (or cloud) connectivity which enable these objects to connect and exchange data.


Virtual servers on the cloud that enable separate copies of defined data items. Can be single or multi instance.
