DigElearn Digital Glossary

We have compiled terms and their definitions from different digital technologies. You will find that some terms are linked with others which will be highlighted in the text or end with a “See” link. If you see a terminology that we have not covered please let us know — contact us. We also review, update and add new terms on a quarterly basis. We hope this helps you in getting more digital savvy.

CDN — Content Distribution Network

A system of distributed servers that deliver pages and other Web content to a user, based on the geographic locations of the user, the origin of the webpage and the content delivery server. CDNs speed the delivery of content of websites with high traffic and websites that have global reach. The closer the CDN server is to the user geographically, the faster the content will be delivered to the user. Servers nearest to the website visitor respond to the request. (Akamai is leading provider.)

Chatbots (Bots)

A computer program that simulates human conversation through voice commands or text chats or both. Chatbot, short for Chatterbot, is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) feature that can be embedded and used through any major messaging applications.

Chief Digital Officer (CDO)

A senior executive role that is focused on driving growth through digitization of data.

Circular Video (SnapChat)

A video camera with a 115-degree field of view. That’s almost exactly the same perspective you see with the human eye, and it gives the glasses the ability to capture circular video. The benefit is you see the video in full screen in any orientation. So you can turn your smartphone or tablet midway through, and the video automatically adjusts to provide a full screen image.


The number of times your post was clicked on by a reader to "read more" or get to additional content.


A type of computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than having local servers or personal devices to handle applications. "The cloud" is a type of Internet-based computing, where different services — such as servers, storage and applications — are delivered to an organization’s computers and devices through the Internet. The cloud infrastructure is maintained by the cloud provider, not the individual cloud customer.

Cognitive Computing

The simulation of human thought processes in a computerized model. Cognitive computing involves self-learning systems that use data mining, pattern recognition and natural language processing to mimic the way the human brain works. The goal is to create automated IT systems that are capable of solving problems without requiring human assistance.

Cone of Uncertainty

Early in a project, specific details of the nature of the software to be built, details of specific requirements, details of the solution, project plan, staffing, and other project variables are unclear. These unknown variables contribute to a cone of uncertainty, which tend to narrow as the projects develops and more information becomes available.

CPA — Cost Per Acquisition (Conversion)

An ecommerce marketing metric that measures the aggregate cost to acquire one paying customer on a campaign or channel level. Total Campaign Cost/ Conversions = CPA.

CPL — Cost per Lead

An ecommerce marketing metric that defines how much revenue a publisher receives when he creates a lead for an advertiser. For example, if a user clicks on the advertisement link, she is directed to the advertiser’s website where she can sign up. If she chooses to sign up, a lead has been created and the publisher is paid a certain amount based on the CPL.

CPC (Cost Per Click)

The cost per click on your ad. (CPC = Total Ad Spend / Total #Clicks Ad Received).

CPM (Cost Per 1,000 Impressions)

The average cost you’ve paid per 1,000 impressions of your ad.

Allows users to run software on multiple environments without worry about underlying operating system, network or infrastructure. Each container has a full run-time environment — an application, libraries, dependencies and config files that enable the continuer to run on everything from virtual machines (VM) to cloud-based PaaS.

Content Marketing

Subset of Inbound Marketing focusing on creating content to acquire customers through promoting blogs, videos, webinars, ebooks to a broad target audience following path of: Awareness, Research, Consideration and Buy.

Conversion Rate

In ecommerce, the term “Conversion Rate” usually refers to the ratio between the number of visits to an online store and the number of purchases made in a given period of time.

CRO — Conversion Rate Optimization

The practice of continually improving your website or landing page’s capacity to convert visitors into leads or customers. Conversion rate optimization is all about making your marketing more successful.

Cost Per Click (CPC)

An internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, in which an advertiser pays a publisher (typically a website owner or a network of websites) when the ad is clicked.

The practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.

CTA — Call To Action

An image or line of text that prompts your visitors, leads, and customers to take action. It is, quite literally, a "call" to take an "action."

CTR — Click Through Rate

The percentage of individuals viewing a web page who click on a specific advertisement that appears on the page. Click-through rate measures how successful an ad has been in capturing users’ interest. The higher the click-through rate, the more successful the ad has been in generating interest.
